Me and my pal Gillian from Elevator Musik have got a bit of a 'thing' for going for burgers and milkshakes - we used to fit a visit in every time I came up to Edinburgh, and now that I live here we have to limit ourselves to only once in a while! When we heard that Bread Meats Bread was opening up a branch on Lothian Road, we knew we had to make a trip. I'd heard from lots of people that the one in Glasgow possibly served the best burgers in the city, so I had high hopes!
We ended up heading along on a Thursday after work and first things first, I have to explain to you how torrential the rain was. It was CHUCKING it down - and not even rain, but that horrible slushy sleet stuff that makes you properly soggy and cold. The restaurant is only a 10 minute walk from my work, but by the time I got there my jeans and boots were soaked - what a nightmare.
On the plus side however, this meant that the restaurant, which had been totally manic all week, was actually fairly empty and there were plenty of tables. We started off by ordering our traditional milkshakes - I went for chocolate with no cream, Gillian opted for strawberry with cream. They were very nice - pretty standard for a milkshake, but no complaints here!
Food wise, our eyes were slightly bigger than our bellies as we both went for ridiculous burgers as well as two sides to share. First, the burgers. I had a speciality one with pulled pork and bacon, which I really enjoyed for the first half. Unfortunately I got a bit put off the second half because I got a mouthful of a huge bit of gristle in the pulled pork, which is never ideal. The pulled pork was pretty average anyway, so I think to be on the safe side I'd go for something a bit simpler next time.
The sweet potato fries were really nice, but the star of the show was the portion of bacon fries. Just have a minute to take that in - fries, covered in bits of crispy bacon. Ohmigod. Even after we were so full we felt a bit ill, we still kept picking away at the bowl - soooo good. All in I'd definitely go back and give it another go, but I'd pick another burger next time.
Do you have a favourite burger place in Edinburgh? Please let me know if you do - I have a list I'm working my way through!
