Review: Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation

I have always been a massive fan of Bourjois makeup, I love the packaging, I love the low prices, I ADORE the nail polishes.

I've been using the Delice de Poudre bronzer basically since it came out, and I barely go a day without popping a bit of my little pot of Rose d'Or blusher on my cheeks. So when I walked into Boots the other week and saw a little display of the new Healthy Mix Serum foundation, Healthy Mix brush concealer and Healthy Balance face powder obviously I couldn't resist buying all three!

At first it was fine. I loved the fruity smell, my face looked okay coverage wise and I thought I'd discovered some new face products that I could add into my everyday makeup routine. Unfortunately my face didn't like the foundation as much as I did.

The first few days after starting using the foundation  I had some tiny dry patches on my skin, which I put down to a slight re-emergence of my childhood eczema issues due to general uni stress. After continuing to use it for a few more days though, it became clear that I was in fact suffering from an allergic reaction.

I took these photos this morning, after three days of applying e45 and taking antihistamines to bring the reaction down. My eyes are so sore and dry and puffy, and I have a rash all over my cheekbones and my chin-it actually keeps me awake at night because my face is so irritated and inflamed that I can't sleep.

I don't have particularly sensitive skin, My last outbreak of eczema was probably when I was about eight. I've never, ever, EVER reacted noticeably from makeup or beauty products, and I've been a makeup addict since I began secondary school.

Asking around has revealed that I'm not the only person to have had this problem with this particular beauty product. My housemate had a similar reaction to me, and five or six people on twitter have said that they had really bad breakouts after starting to use the foundation or concealer.

It has to be said that a couple of people have tweeted me saying they had absolutely no problems, or even that they found the foundation beneficial to their skin. I'm not saying that if you use these products you will definitely have issues with it. I would recommend doing some kind of patch test first though, because I have been so uncomfortable/in pain the last few days and I wouldn't want any of you to have the same problem.

This isn't going to stop me using my favourite Bourjois products, or even trying new ones. I just might go elsewhere for my foundation in future...

Does anyone have any idea what aspect of the product could be causing this kind of reaction in people?

Next Day Update:

My face is much much worse today-I had to call nhs24 when I woke up because I was a bit worried by how puffy and rashy my face was! I also haven't slept at all. Fun.

  1. cripes! poor you. I bought the bourjois flower something or other foundation the other day as it was on offer and my normal mac and estee lauder shades are too dark at the moment, and 2 for £13 instead of 1 for 10.99, who can argue with that!
I hope I dont get any reaction to it, because a) it would hurt and b) I would still need a lighter foundation.
I hope you get back to normal soon as, you still looked lovely in your latest outfit! x

  2. I had an allergic reaction to their eyeshadows a few years ago so don't use them anymore which is a shame as they always look so pretty. x

  3. Oh you poor thing! :( I LOVE the healthy mix foundations, have been using them for ages now and had no problems. However last weekend I had a terrible allergic reaction to something (I still don't know what, I think washing powder) and my lip swelled up and I got hives all over my legs, so I feel your pain. Still on antihistamine tablets! Sucks x

    1. I used the old black lid one with absolutely no problems the other year, its the red lid one that has caused this reaction-very odd! Aw no that sounds horrible :( x

  4. Oh goodness, you poor thing. If they use essential oils in the product it could be that; I can't use any LUSH products due to the same thing.

    1. Ooh really? I just can't work out what it could be because I've literally never reacted to any other kind of makeup/shampoo/cream/bath stuff anything! x

  5. Oh no that's awful! Maybe have a look on the website and compare the ingredients with another foundation that doesn't cause any reaction and hopefully you can identify the culprit. Awful though hon, you really don't expect that from a range like Bourjois! x

  6. Oh no, I feel so sorry for you! It's horrible when your skin reacts badly to products! I personally love the Bourjois foundations, mainly because they are light enough for my skin tone! There must be an ingredient that doesn't agree with your skin :( I hope it gets better soon!

  9. oh gosh babe, hope it goes down soon and you feel better. I love the foundation as it gives me good coverage for lazy uni days, but it did have a few outbreaks but not THAT bad, I think my skin got used to it after a while. Maybe it was the perfume in it or something? it is very smelly even if it is a nice smell x

  14. Oh Lauren, hope you're feeling better and seeing some improvement. I have mega sensitive skin, so don't experiment with my make-up very much at all, but it must be a shock to have such a strong reaction when you're not used to it. I hope it's something that a usually reputable company like Bourjois are able to address because it would be a shame to see them not to.

  17. Oh my gosh you poor thing :( I'd be scared like crazy if this happened to me. I've had bad experiences with other foundations because of my skin so this has put me off buying this one. I hope you get better soon xx

I have really, REALLY sensitive skin and like most people my skin looks crap without any foundation on. Therefore, I like to mix my foundation with either a dab of bb cream or some moisturiser mixed with

  21. Ahh that's awful, hope you recover soon! This foundation should come with a health warning haha! I was tempted to try it but I've heard a few people say it made them break out/react badly so think I will avoid it just to be safe.

  23. I hope you're better soon. I was tempted to get this until I read a few reviews saying it was a little dark and yellowy for pale skin tones. Now after seeing this I definitely won't be getting it. Get well soon! xx

  28. Oh you poor thing! I have very sensitive skin and have woken up with a puffy eye before now, but never so extreme :(
I recommend Clarins Everlasting or Skins Illusion foundations for sensitive/itchy prone skin they both smell fantastic like Bourjois but have never upset my skin!

  29. I'm sorry this happened to you. I was searching for the ingredients (I always do, I'm really sensitive) in the Bourjois foundation and it contains ALCOHOL! both this serum one and the normal healthy mix one (that one actually has 2 types of alcohol), and it's pretty high on the ingredient list -the 6th ingr if i recall properly-, and that's a major iritant along with the added frgrance. so i'm pretty sure this irritated your skin. i hope you recovered quickly :)

  30. I had the same problem but just on one eye, it's now happened when I have used mac foundation :-(

  31. The exact same thing is happehing to me right now. My eye has swollen up rash under my eyes and neck. I never even made the connection to my makeup, I thought it was stress related as I hsve never had the problem before. Im not using that again. How long did it take for your skin to recover. Ive had this over a week now.

Withing half hour my bottom eye kids felt painful (luckily only applied under eyes) few hours later my eyes where so saw and looked like the skin had burnt. I removed the make upas there was nothing else I had had or eaten. During the night I woke looking like my face was sun burnt and all swollen!
It's now Sunday late pm and my eyes are still painfully to touch and when I blink
